Breakin' Tradition
type exploration
Rock So Fresh (RSF) is a bboy crew based out of San Diego, California. Established in 2001, they are one of the few crews today that carry a traditional approach to breakdancing, heavily emphasizing foundational movements, while pushing the boundaries of creativity that stem from a strong understanding of Hip Hop culture's fundamental elements of rhythm, style, and finesse.
I wanted to narrate RSF's approach to breakin' through an exploration of blackletters, often used on the back of breakdancers' shirts to represent his or her crew, as if to say: "They've got my back."
By literally "breaking" the letters apart, my goal is to communicate that honoring tradition and understanding fundamentals are key components in the journey to break beyond it.
